![]() Its stark modern design made it a center of controversy even before it officially opened in 1963. With these materials architect Gordon Bunshaft, working closely with Yale University administrators and the Beinecke family, created the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. ![]() Beneath this level are two stories which contain the mechanical equipment and large book stack space on the lower level, and another stack space, catalog and reference room, reading room and staff offices arranged around a sunken court designed by Isamu Noguchi on the upper level.Marble, granite, bronze, and glass. Visitors enter from the ground level into a glass-enclosed lobby that reveals the grand exhibition hall that holds the books. The beauty of the library is enhanced by the large open plaza in which it is located. The trusses are made out of of prefabricated, tapered steel crosses which are covered with grey granite on the outside and with precast granite aggregate concrete on the inside. The structure that frames these rectangular blocks consists of Vierendeel trusses, high, and 88′ and 131′ long, which transfer their loads to four massive corner columns. The sleek marble allows for enough light to filter into the interior spaces without damaging the collections. It's "windows," blocked in a consistent linear rhythm along the exterior, consist of white, gray-veined marble panes that are one and one-quarter inches thick and are framed by shaped light gray Vermont Woodbury granite. Made of Vermont marble and granite, bronze and glass, the exterior gives the illusion that the building is completely solid when viewed from the outside. ![]() The response became a beautiful choice of classic materials gleaming amongst the neo-Classical and neo-Gothic buildings surrounding the library in the Hewitt University Quadrangle on the campus. The challenge was to provide ample lighting in the interior for people to study and read and to make it a pleasantly habitable space while limiting the amount of light that affects the stored volumes. The main concern that both SOM and Yale University considered in the design of the library was the preservation of the documents within it. ![]() The major collections are the General Collection, which are divided into the General Collection of Early Books and Manuscripts and the General Collection of Modern Books and Manuscripts, the Collection of American Literature, the Collection of German Literature, the Collection of Western Americana, and the Osborn Collection of British Literary and Historical Manuscripts. The Beinecke library was a gift from the Beinecke family, and since 1963 has accommodated six major collections in its rare and marvelous structure that coincides with the literary gems it stores, including those from the Rare Book Room. In 1930 these special books were relocated to Rare Book Room collection in the Sterling Memorial Library. ![]() Prior to the completion of this project, Yale University placed its rare books on special shelving in Dwight Hall, which was the Old Library in the late 19th century. It was designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill/Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and is located in New Haven, Connecticut. Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library is the largest building in the world dedicated to the containment and preservation of rare books, manuscripts, and documents. ![]()

![]() ![]() V and Ruby are raw, honest, and sometimes silly his investment in her singing is real and creates further tension between Ruby and her family, forcing Ruby to make decisions about how to move forward. To her, he’s not just a choir teacher, but also a mentor in self-discovery and pursuit of passions. The teacher quickly becomes Ruby’s most trusted adult outside of her family. V (Eugenio Derbez), Ruby’s choir teacher, is a character whose relationship with Ruby is fully developed on screen - and worth getting invested in. The film also succeeds in building on Ruby’s dream to become a singer. Highlighting her relationship with her family brings most of the tension in the film they are dependent on her to navigate the hearing world, but she wants to go on to the next stage in her life. Unlike in many coming-of-age films, Ruby’s parents are primary characters who both provide support for Ruby and narrative tension throughout the film. In CODA, however, teenage rebellion does not mean that Ruby goes off on a journey of self-discovery alone. In response to the friction, Ruby rebels - a teenage rite of passage. In Ruby’s relationships with her family, she finds both comfort and friction. As a CODA, Ruby often acts as the connection between the deaf and hearing worlds, translating everything from business discussions in the fishing industry to her parents’ appointment with a doctor about a sexually transmitted infection.ĬODA’s strengths are in the film’s ability to tug at familial heartstrings. ![]() ![]() The film follows Ruby as she manages responsibilities at school and at home, while seeking an independent identity for herself. At this moment, Ruby begins her transformation. When the two friends have to sign up for their electives, Ruby chooses choir, much to Gertie’s surprise. She has one friend, Gertie (Amy Forsyth), but otherwise keeps to herself. In years prior, she’s been bullied for having a deaf family and smelling like fish, since she often spends mornings working on the family’s boat. Ruby is a senior in high school and something of an outcast. It’s a family drama and comedy, though at its core, CODA is Ruby’s coming-of-age - she learns to navigate life on her terms and seek out experiences that speak to her own soul. She must navigate two worlds, all the while figuring out what she wants her life to be. Ruby is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) both of her parents (Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin) and her brother (Daniel Durant) are deaf, with her as the only hearing member of the family. Ruby’s singing goes unheard, except by the audience. Writer-director Sian Heder’s CODA opens with music: the voice of one girl - Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones) - as she sings powerfully over the noise of the fishing boat where she works with her father and brother. ![]() ![]() Basically this card and others could lead to a strong Rogue late game deck, but I still don’t think that deck would be better than Pogo bunnies for a late game Rogue deck. Most manual transmissions in modern passenger vehicles are fitted with synchromesh to equalize the shaft speeds within the transmission, so they are synchronous transmissions. Sequential manual transmissions, which are commonly used in motorcycles, ATVs, and racecars, are a type of non-synchronous (unsynchronized) manual transmission, where gear ratios must be selected in succession (order), hence direct access to a specific gear ratio is not possible. Non-synchronous transmissions are mostly used in semi-trucks, large industrial machines, older agricultural tractors (eg Massey ferguson 135) and power take-offs. In order to shift into gear, the clutch must be halfway off the floor, otherwise, the clutch brake will prevent the transmission from being shifted into or out of gear.Īny transmission that requires the driver to manually synchronize the engine speed with the speed of the driveshaft is non-synchronous. The clutch brake not only slows or stops the idle gear axis but can also prevent shifting into gear until the clutch pedal is released a few centimetres (or inches) off the floor. The purpose of the clutch brake is to slow down (or stop) the rotation of the transmission's input shaft, which assists in shifting the transmission into neutral or first gear when the vehicle is at a standstill. Unlike any other type of transmission, non-synchronous transmissions often have a clutch brake mechanism, which is usually activated by pressing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor or pressing a button on the top of the gear lever. In big rigs and semi-trucks, the driver may have to complete 24 or more gear changes when accelerating from a standstill to 70 mph (110 km/h). Float shifting: shifting without using the clutch. ![]() Double-clutching: releasing the clutch in neutral to synchronize the speeds of the shafts within the transmission. If improperly implemented, these techniques can cause damage to the vehicle or the loss of control of the vehicle. Trained drivers of vehicles with non-synchronous transmissions sometimes use the techniques listed below. Driving techniques Commercial vehicle transmission diagram showing the gear fork, gearbox, and gears ![]() The first usage of synchromesh was by Cadillac in 1928. The Panhard design was refined over the years by other manufacturers to include "constant-mesh" gears (instead of sliding gears). This transmission used a sliding-gear design without any form of speed synchronization, causing frequent grinding of the gear teeth during gear shifts. In 1891, the French Panhard et Levassor automobile used a three-speed manual transmission and is considered to have set the template for multi-speed manual transmissions in motor vehicles. Most early automobiles were rear-engined, using a single-speed transmission and belt-drive to power the rear wheels. Prior to the 1950s and 1960s, most cars used constant-mesh (and also sliding-mesh) but non-synchronous transmissions. Non-synchronous manual transmissions are also found on motorcycles, in the form of constant-mesh sequential manual transmissions. Non-synchronous transmissions are found primarily in various types of industrial machinery such as tractors and semi-tractors. They require the driver to manually synchronize the transmission's input speed (engine RPM) and output speed (driveshaft speed). Form of manual transmission Three-speed sliding-gear non-synchronous transmission Non-synchronous "crash" gearbox commonly used today in semi-trucks and tractors, and formerly used in automobiles pre-1950sĪ non-synchronous transmission, also called a crash gearbox, is a form of manual transmission based on gears that do not use synchronizing mechanisms. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
